OCTOBER EVENT: DISCOVER THE FOREST (IF YOU DARE)
Hello, passengers! You’ve all survived your first month in space, so give yourselves a round of applause … just not out in space, because you won’t be able to hear it.
First up, we have a few housekeeping items:
1. Please double check that you have joined the comms and filled out all info pages for your character, including taken, housing, and player contact.
2a. Please also make sure you have filled out pairing info! October will be our first month of pairings, and if you don’t have information available, you may not be paired or you may be assigned at random.
2b. Please check out the above-linked pairing info, chat with other players, and decide on whether you’d like to try out an arranged temporary pairing. Once you’ve got that hammered out, please make your requests for October here, no later than Friday, Oct. 2, at midnight CT. Pairing info and a mingle log will be posted on Oct. 3. If you wish to be randomized, please make a note of that. If you do not respond, you will be randomized at mod whim.
3. Here’s your reminder to fill out your activity check! Since this is everyone’s first month, all you need to do is set up your reporting link. This needs to be done no later than midnight CT on Monday, Oct. 5.
4. If you plan to claim specialty items from this month’s planet visit, please make sure to request them no later than midnight on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
5. We’ve decided to increase the per-player character limit from two to three. Bring us more disasters!
Now, onward to the schedule of events!
Navi is finally repaired and rested enough to get back on the road, so we’ll be departing Alkonost on Oct. 1. As noted above, partner pairing will be completed and posted on Oct. 3, along with a mingle log for everyone to get to know their new brain-roommates, as well as general on-ship shenanigans. Who doesn’t love shenanigans?
Our next planet visit begins on Oct. 17. Navi will get a lead on one of their people in the area of the planet Crybhaid and land near the town of Riella, which sits at the edge of an expansive, heavily forested area. Riella’s not terribly modernized - think American Old West - but the townsfolk are friendly to visitors. For this group, they’ll be more than friendly, in fact - they have a mission, should you choose to accept it.
See, over the last few months, about a dozen children have gone missing, and the townsfolk’s search parties have been unable to locate them. There’s a standard reward for any visitors who are willing to accept this quest and are able to bring the children home safely. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, what the residents don’t mention outright in this request is that there is a local legend about the forest being inhabited by a spooky, sinister presence known as the Twig Man.
If you can get a local to tell you of this legend, they’ll describe the Twig Man as an abnormally tall, pale, thin figure with a featureless face, wearing a plain black suit and tie, possessing multiple tentacle-like appendages. He’s believed to be responsible for kidnapping the local missing children, though no one can confirm this, nor what exactly the Twig Man wants - there’s no verifiable documentation of the Twig Man, just rumors and stories passed on to children, along with the warning to stay out of the forest past the point where visibility of the town ends. According to legend, the Twig Man’s presence can be sensed by a sudden, crushing feeling of dread, fear, anxiety, and/or paranoia, dizziness, nosebleeds, delusions, erratic and/or violent behavior, and lingering nightmares afterward. Audio and video recordings, and any other technology, will glitch or shut down entirely until the Twig Man leaves the area.
If all of this sounds familiar - well, it should. You might better know the Twig Man as Slenderman.

So. Have fun with that.
If further incentive is needed to venture into the cursed forest, our very own Jon Sims will get himself kidnapped by Slendy and need rescuing. Luckily, he’ll be held in the same cabin in a remote, deep part of the woods as the missing children. This trek will take several days, so be sure to stock up on supplies and gear in town before you head out!
For an added layer of fun, the forest has a spooky supernatural effect on those who wander in deep - sometimes, they will find themselves temporarily transformed into their younger selves. As in, they will become children again and thus even more enticing to Slendy. This is an optional effect, of course, and will occur in rolling waves - i.e., characters will de-age and re-age at player whim throughout the forest journey. While de-aged, those affected will have the mentality and memory of the child they were at that age.
For anyone who stays behind in the town, you can chill at the local inn, shop at the general store, go hiking or camping in the safer parts of the forest (though really, the locals strongly advise against it), or join up for day labor as a lumberjack.
As before, Navi will provide Navigems upon arrival to Riella, and these gems can be exchanged at the general store for Universal Credits, the universal payment method of the universe. The number of gems and credits you receive is unimportant and will be fuzzywaved - the bottom line is that you will have enough credits to purchase a REASONABLE stockpile of foods, toiletries, etc. for the voyage going forward. Every character can also request TWO specialty items in the comments below that can be acquired at the general store, keeping the setting in mind for available tech. If you’re unsure if something you want qualifies, just ask! You’ll have this opportunity for item requests at every planet stop, so don’t fret too hard over what to pick, because you’ll always have another chance. Please make all item requests by Oct. 31, when Navi takes off.
Questions? Suggestions for the setting or player plots? Leave ‘em below!
